Holocaust Education

Parents may be aware that pupils in Year 9 and the Sixth Form benefit from a range of Holocaust education. In Year 9, pupils experience an intensive day of Holocaust education on Curriculum Enrichment Day, whilst in the Sixth Form we dedicate a Sixth Form lecture to this topic. In many years pupils have been fortunate enough to hear a personal testimony from a survivor.

A significant number of staff have also been trained by the Holocaust Education Trust.

This year we decided we would like to extend our work and apply to become a Holocaust Education Beacon school. I am delighted that our application was successful and Miss O’Kelly has agreed to develop this area of the school’s work. This will involve a broader range of events and provide training for other schools and teachers.

A group of secondary and primary Headteachers and pastoral leaders from St Albans and Harpenden are working on a project to build resilience and improve the emotional wellbeing of young people in the area.
In order to do this, they would like to survey parents/ carers to collect information that will enable them to be better informed of the parent/carer perspective. If you are interested in taking part in the survey please follow the link below:
A reminder of early closure

I would like to remind parents that the school closes early at 12.45pm on Friday 23rd June for the Upper Sixth Leavers’ Reception and 12.45pm on 7th July for the Lower Sixth Facing the Future Conference.
Education Funding
Parents may have seen that the debate around education funding featured prominently in the general election. Hertfordshire Headteachers’ remain concerned about the possibility of significant budget cuts if the proposed national funding formula is introduced next year. We are also concerned that though the Government has promised to ring fence education funding, they have not proposed to meet our increasing costs. St Albans and Harpenden heads have continued to lobby our local MPs to raise this issue at a national level.
A uniform reminder
Please remind pupils that summer uniform requires pupils to wear either a tailored summer shirt with badge or a plain shirt with tie.
Request for Leave of Absence
Could I remind parents that teaching and indeed examinations at Verulam continue until the end of this term and therefore we do not authorise leave of absence for holidays for the end of term.
Warm weather
During warm weather all pupils should stay hydrated. Please could you remind your son/daughter to drink at break and lunchtime. Boys should also come to school equipped with a water bottle.
Support Staff Vacancies
We currently have two vacancies for support staff which parents may be interested in:
1. An Administration Officer who will be working on all matters relating to staff contracts with relevant experience in pensions and salaries; and
2. An Attendance Improvement Officer with experience in education welfare and attendance work essential.
Please contact Ms K Bonass if you are interested in either vacancy.
