Supporting Learning & Literacy

Library-Based Learning for Year 7 & 8

Students in Years 7 and 8 participate in fortnightly satellite lessons in the library as part of their English curriculum. These sessions, led by Miss Pettitt (Librarian and Reading Lead), incorporate the Sparx Reader program to develop reading skills.

Lesson Structure:

  • Introduction & Reading Assessment: Students complete a Sparx Reader assessment to determine their reading age, allowing progress tracking and providing book recommendations suited to their level.
  • Guided Reading & Comprehension: Year 7 and 8 students work through library lesson booklets containing specially selected short stories. The class reads the text together, with comprehension questions throughout to build understanding.
  • Digital Library Access: Students are guided on how to navigate our e-book library and discover texts aligned with their interests.
  • Sparx Reader: Students read individually selected books on the Sparx Reader program, completing brief quizzes to assess comprehension and earn Sparx Reader Points (SRP) based on accuracy.
  • Independent Reading & Post-Reading Activities: Students engage in activities that promote critical thinking, inference skills, and making connections between texts.

These structured lessons provide a balanced approach to support, challenge, and engagement empowering students to build confidence and cultivate a lifelong passion for reading.

Library Assitant Programme

Student Librarians

Students from Year 7 through to Sixth Form are invited to volunteer as Student Librarians, playing a valuable role in supporting the school library. During break and lunch, Student Librarians assist the librarian with a variety of tasks, including organising shelves, straightening books, and managing returns.

The initial week of volunteering requires daily participation to demonstrate commitment and dedication to the role. Students who complete the first week are awarded a Student Librarian Badge and a ‘Making a Difference and Leaving a Legacy’ Letter of Recognition (LoR). Following this, Student Librarians are expected to volunteer at least once a week.

Selected Student Librarians may be entrusted with more advanced responsibilities, such as scanning returned books and issuing loans through a dedicated Student Librarian account on the library app using their own device. This ‘Student Librarian’ experience can be a valuable addition to their academic CV.
