Teaching and Learning at Verulam: The Verulam Way

At Verulam School, we believe there are core principles of excellent Teaching and Learning. We strive to create ‘effective learners’ by supporting students to plan, monitor, understand and manage their own learning in order to develop into inquisitive, self-motivated learners. In order to achieve this, all staff are supported and trained to use effective approaches (as indicated by educational research from the Education Endowment Foundation) such as peer tutoring, collaborative learning, feedback, meta-cognition and self-regulation strategies.

Effective feedback

Incisive and forensic feedback on attainment is given by teachers in red pen. This feedback aims to move the student forward in their learning. A response from students in green pen is also required to strengthen the teaching and learning process in order to accelerate and deepen learning. We call this “RESPOND”.

Homework at Verulam

Homework is set on Google Classroom as an ‘assignment’

  • Due dates and resources will be outlined on Google Classroom;
  • As a parent, you can receive weekly Google Guardian email summaries, allowing you to see homework tasks set by teachers via Google Classroom.

Google Guardian email summaries include the following:

  • Missing work – work that is late at the time the email was sent
  • Upcoming work – work that is due today and tomorrow (for daily emails) or work that’s due in the upcoming week (for weekly emails)
  • Class activity – announcements, assignments, and questions recently posted by teachers

Google Guardian set up

  • It is important to recognise that you will not be able to access or login to Google Classroom. The Guardian Summaries come as an automated email containing all of the information you need to support your child at home.
  • In order to receive daily updates, you will need a Google account in order to change your settings. Please either sign in with a Google account if you have one or create a new google account.
